Hi all it’s been a while and we have a bit to share so let’s get started.

Firstly where have we been? Well we paused development several months ago, because well to be quite frank we ran into several serious performance issues and problems when attempting to run or add additional voices/accents put simply, when we tried to add additional content we observed the CPU usage of the devices rocketing to the stratosphere.

See below:

These are images of Second Voice’s high CPU and Memory/RAM usage overtime when tested in an emulated iPhone 16 Pro, this performance (or lack there of) is unacceptable especially when running on a current generation pro-model iPhone… so what happened? Well put simply Second Voice grew more and faster then we could have ever imagined which is great. BUT Second Voice was designed as a minimum viable product, something quick and dirty to see if people liked it. We didn’t have the time nor resources to optimize for the amounts of the prompts we ended up adding in a rush to make this accessible and easy to use and so… this is the result. A side effect of this rushed/work fast & break things approach is that as technology progressed we were still stuck on an aging codebase. This resulted in us simply missing out on incredible technology like Apple’s “Life Speech” or Google’s “Live Dictation” which allowed users to create and customize voices that could be used to speak out-loud or over the phone using a keyboard and even assign commonly used words or sentences to buttons. Something we would have loved to have added;

Recently we received some credits from Google Cloud to continue further development. This means we now have access reliable infrastructure that scales with us and new technology. For this reason Second Voice may become exclusive to Android devices for some time, that said. We can’t wait to do more and will continue to support the project, using this funding we are excited to bring our community new features and adopt new technology to make Second Voice a better experience.

Thank you Google Cloud & Thank you reader for your time and continued support of Second Voice.
